Develop Your Soul Goals!

Occasionally when I talk with people about goals they seem to interpret the intention of goals as being to get more things. Naturally things are important but there is so much more to goal setting that I wish to share with you.

Of course it is important to have goals for new things …

Perhaps your dream home by the ocean …

Maybe a nice shiny new car to get you around in style …

or even a new iPod to listen to your Goals Magic CD’s on :)

It’s great to set goals for new things, but not for the things themselves, rather what they will make of you to get them.

But there is another type of goal which I want to challenge you to think about and begin to set. It’s soul goals!
Now I know you are wondering … what are soul goals and how do they apply to me and my life? Great question, so come with me and discover why you will soon be applying them in your life.

Soul goals are those goals that are larger than you! They are goals that impact on other people and on the world around you. They are goals that you invest your heart and soul into without any expectation of return. Soul goals are what gives life its passion, purpose & meaning!
Think of Martin Luther King Jnr … his whole life was dedicated to the pursuit of his soul goals! In the end he gave his life for his soul goals. It takes a mighty goal and a might man to give your life to.

What about Mother Theresa? She passionately pursued her soul goals of taking care of those who were not empowered to look after themselves.
Now I’m not suggesting that you will want to pursue grand goals that have a profound impact on the world around you … rather, that you look deep inside yourself and find something that you have a passion to contribute to the world.

What is it that you feel a sense of desire to do something about? What cause can you see yourself adding value to? What community, national or global projects are calling you to them and resonating with you?
All of us need soul goals that we can invest our hearts, our minds and our souls into. We all need to feel a connection with something larger than ourselves. Its inherent in our souls to want to give without expectation of return.

As you search for your soul goals now, open your mind and heart to the infinite possibilities to match your unique skills, wisdom, specialized knowledge, compassion, assets, contacts, networks, creativity, and genius to. As you read these words knowing what you know about your incredible untapped capacity you can find a way to apply it in some way for the greater good.

Seek out your soul goals! Set your soul goals! Share your soul goals! Pursue your soul goals! Grow your soul goals! Encourage others to adopt soul goals!
Here is a noble thought … for every five goals I set for me I have one soul goal to help thee! Soul goals are paying back your debt of gratitude for the good fortune you have to be able to pursue your personal or business goals.

So add a little soul into your goals!

Personal Development Profiles - A Tool for Effective Coaching

Personal development profiles, also known as personality profiles, are a tool I frequently use before starting a course of coaching with a client. The client answers a series of questions about preferred behaviour styles and their responses generate a report which outlines their strengths, areas for improvement, blind spots, their contribution to the team, ways they could improve their communication and how to deal with challenging people.

I find personal development profiles are a great start to the coaching process as the profile helps the client to begin looking at their own behaviour in ways they have probably never done before. It helps to develop rapport as the coach is not providing the feedback at this stage - it has been generated by their own responses. The coach provides assistance in understanding the report and I find that many clients experience an ‘aha!’ moment when they suddenly realise why they find certain kinds of people or situation difficult. Occasionally I have been asked if I have been talking to their mother!

As mentioned, the report will identify ‘blind spots’. For obvious reasons these are not evident to us, and often friends and colleagues are hesitant about giving feedback. If they try, we may reject it as the mind does not like the idea we may have a failing. For an executive or leader in business, the situation can be even more difficult, as none of their colleagues may be brave enough to point out the reality of the situation until a crisis has arisen.

Looking at the profile is a taste of what is to come during coaching when the coach’s job is to provide feedback and ask challenging and provocative questions designed to get below the surface behaviour to understand what’s driving it.

I know that some people are cynical about personal development profiles - the most common criticism I have heard is that they ‘put people in a box’. To that I would reply that they are merely a good starting point for a process of understanding self and others. They do not provide the whole picture of an individual, but they are a useful guide to how they might behave in certain situations.

Magic - Developing A Stage Routine

Developing a magic routine for a large hall or stage is not easy. The reason is that most magic tricks, especially for beginning magicians, are designed for small intimate gatherings because the tricks themselves are small and can’t be seen from far away. This makes doing a routine for a large hall or stage a little more tricky. But it can be done. Here are some tips in putting together a good half hour routine for a large hall or stage.

You can actually start this routine off the same way you would for a small gathering with the hanky turned into a cane trick. The only difference is, when you bring the hanky out on stage it is going to have to be a lot bigger and much more colorful than the one you would use for a small gathering. This way, everyone can easily see it, even those in the back of the room or theater. After you produce the cane, take your magicians top hat off and place it on a table that is already set up. Show everyone in the audience that the hat is empty. You have to make sure that you move the hat around from left to right, slowly, so that everybody can see it is empty. Then, place it on the table, wave the cane over it and begin pulling things out of it. You must make sure that each item you pull out of the hat is large enough for everybody to see. When doing this, don’t stand at the side of the hat. Stand in back of the hat and slightly to one side so that everybody can see the items coming out and your body isn’t blocking the background. If you do this it may be difficult for people to see the items, especially if you are wearing a black tuxedo.

The remainder of the tricks need to all be large. This is where you’re going to have to bite the bullet and spend some money. Card tricks are not going to cut it in a gathering like this. You’re going to have to spring for things like the vanishing box, where you place your assistant in the box and make her disappear and then bring her back. Yes, you are going to need an assistant for almost all these tricks. Make sure she is dressed nicely so that the guys in the audience will enjoy looking at her. This will add to the overall enjoyment of your performance.

If you’re having problems finding large magic tricks, there are a number of places on the Internet where you can get these. Some of the more common ones that are great for stage are the Jumbo Rabbit or Production Die Box, The Super Sword Through The Neck (sells for about $800), The Fairy Tale Rabbit House (a very elaborate and beautiful trick), The Houdini Shackle Escape (a real bargain at $30) and The Needle Through Arm Illusion.

As with the small gathering, you want to keep your tricks flowing and make sure that everything is set up on stage ahead of time. It’s okay to have to wheel something center stage from the back or the sides but you don’t want to be dragging things onto the stage from off stage. Your audience will start to get restless. Speed is very important. You don’t want them thinking about the last trick, but always concentrating on the next one.
